The public generally knows that flossing is an important part of good oral health care. Although knowledge and practice are two different things! The Canadian Dental Association encourages flossing daily for a clean mouth. At ToothMatters, we are here to help understand the truth behind some of the common myths about flossing!
Myth #1: Flossing is hard to do
The truth is that flossing is now easier than ever before. At ToothMatters we can show you the recommended technique to floss daily. If you are still having difficulties, you can also try a floss holder. Many people find these easier to manage in one hand.
Myth #2: Flossing only needs to be done when I have food stuck in my teeth
Yes, flossing helps to remove trapped food between your teeth. However, it also helps to remove plaque build up too! If plaque sits on your teeth for too long, it can lead to tooth decay, gum disease and even tooth loss in some cases!
Myth #3: Flossing should be stopped if my gums are bleeding
Seeing blood isn’t pleasant, but it is not something to instantly panic about! Some bleeding when flossing is normal. Just know It’s not a reason to give up flossing! Bleeding can mean that you are flossing too enthusiastically. Be sure to floss gently! If you have inflamed gums or gum disease, you may experience some bleeding too.
